What are Candles usually made of?

Most candles now available are made of paraffin wax, often blended with stearin. paraffin wax is derived from oil by-products, whereas stearin can be of animal or vegetable origin. Candles can also be made from beeswax. We cast our candles using a blend of paraffin wax and palm oil derived stearin.

Many candles on the market today are mechanically compressed using wax powder, and then given a fancy finish. These are easy to identify as they weigh very little and generally burn poorly.

In the past tallow wax was used for candles. This was smelly and smoky and was gotten from the rendering down of animal carcasses.

There are many blends of modern candle waxes, with differing characteristics and qualities for different uses.
